Chris Falkenberg’s Mouse Knight is built almost entirely on green. The forest, the grass, the shadows—everything sits in that range. It’s calm and cohesive, but it also sets up the contrast. The mouse’s orange ear, the red mushroom, and the ladybug suddenly carry a lot of visual weight because they break that sea of green.

What makes the piece work, though, is how little detail it actually uses. The background is mostly loose strokes. The “pebbles” on the water are practically scribbles. But the key elements—the mouse, the sword, the mushroom—are just detailed enough to sell the illusion. The result feels rich and alive without being overworked.
